1	Week One, January 22-23 Student Questionaire Introductions, Class Overview, Syllabus,Commitment Needed, Email Working on computers,getting comfortable, tour of lab Storage Options (jump drive, CD’s, etc.) Watch part of Waking Life Movie. Painting Movie. Basic Drawing, Painting, Pencil, (Layers, Color Swatches, Brushes) Brush Dynamics Macintosh Operating System,desktop, finder,viewing files Logging on to User Disk, Burning CD's Where to find HELP
	Assignment Due next week. Waking Life/ Overpainting Self Portrait Description: Using learned painting skills, redraw or paint yourself in the style of an artist of your choice. You should not see any of the original photograph.Examples: Robert Linklater’s Waking Life, Holly Roberts, Van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Chuck Close Bring your final file to class, we will print it in class. Learn the names of the tools on the Photoshop Toolbar. Find a digital Artist on the web you really like. Have that name for class next week. You can look on my website Http://www.tomshirley.com Bring well printed black and white, and color prints to class next week.
2	Week Two, January 29-30 Printing to ethernet printers Critique: Overpainting Your Portrait File Management- New Documents, Canvas Size, Save/ Save As Digital Artists Survey Movie Learning how to scan prints using the Epson scanners with Silverfast Software.
	Assignments Scan your black and white and a color prints. Due next week. read ch. 3, p. 53-68 "creating and saving files" read ch. 6, p. 93-108 "pixel bsics"
3	Week Three, Feb 5-6 Due B&W and Color Print Scans (8x10 @ 360 ppi = 30 mb File) In class check digital scans. Demos/ Discussions Scanning film on the Epson Scanners. Photoshop Preferences, Photoshop @ Home, Calibration Units of Digital Storage (kb, mb, gb), Resolution Image Size Naming Conventions Digital Imaging Workflow Basic Image Correction -Adjustment Layers, Color Correction Basic Color correction theory.
	Assignments Scan a black and white, and color negative outside of class. Bring them to class next week with corrected levels,curves, and color casts. Read CH 2 Color, Ch 11 Tonal Adjustments
4	Week Four, Feb 12-13 Due B&W and Color Image Files scanned with threshold,layers, and curves adjustments. Demos/ Discussions • Copy/ Paste, Layer Management • Retouching Skills (Rubber Stamp, Healing,Patch Tool) • Navigation Palette, Hand Tool, Magnification, 100%, Viewing Modes • Removing color casts. Print Demo-
	Assignments 1) finish retouch man, bring the file to class 2) read Ch. 18 "Retouch" 3) bring your 8 scanned files with adjustment layers, and sized to print on 8.5" x 11" paper
5	Week Five, Feb 19-20 Look at Retouch Man on screen/ work in class to improve him. • Veggie Man to be done in class. • Parts of a Computer • File storage options • Backing Up • In Class Print Color File, Daylight Viewing Booth, Color Filters
	Assignments 1) Retouch man printed on phaser 2) 1 color print on luster and 1 B&W print on 4800 using Matte black 3) Read Ch. 8 "Select", and ch.13 "Color adjustment"
6	Week Six, Feb 26-27 Due one black and white print, one color Demos/ Discussions• Selection, Adding/ Subtracting to Selection, Quickmasks • Intro to digital camera’s (In class do Hockney Assignment) • Layer mask • FINAL PROJECT INTRO Final Project Guidelines, How to Write a Proposal Assignments Write a Final Project Proposal Due Week 12
	Assignmnets Next week we will shoot Hockney Assignment. Bring camera if you want to use your own. Final project idea typed and also e-mailed to the grad assistant and faculty member. Print one more color and one more black and white.Total 2 color and 2 grayscale Read Ch 22 Masks.

10	Week Ten, March 26-27 Due: Self Portrayal collage/triptch File Formats/ Compression Film Recorder Filters Sharpening. Unsharp mask Learning to Scan on the Little Imacon Scanners. Channel Mixer iPhoto and how to make an iPhoto Movie of your work.
	Assignmnets CD case and label designed for your work. Your CD must have the following, Your Name, information on how to reach you,(phone and e-mail) Include a identity logo made with type. Your cd must have a midterm project movie of all your assignments including the cd project itself.
11	Week Eleven, April 2-3 Due CD project. Copyright Issues In Class Discussion: Image Appropriation, Websites, Clip Art Review of Getting Images from Web, Trip to the Library Making jpgs, gifs individual meetings Assignments Digital Artist Presentation Due Week 14

	For the final you must have your files with layers downsampled to 72 dpi on a cd. I would also like a web gallery of your work-use the simple one. You must have a written statement about your work "project statement". All prints must look professional (white border on 13x19 paper or matts)
