PREREQUISITES:Division I (Photo/Darkroom 1)

DESCRIPTION:Description 23-2201 Digital Imaging I 3 cr. This course introduces the student to computer tools that manipulate and enhance photographic images. These tools allow you to input B/W and color photographs, negatives, positives, and graphics into Photoshop, the industry standard for digital image manipulation. You will learn the skills to retouch and enhance these varied inputs in order to create high-quality digital outputs. Output devices include film recorders, CD-ROM burners and high quality printers. Assignments, case studies and the final project are designed to help master basic techniques of image-editing in order to expand the photographer’s creative horizons.

This syllabus is subject to change depending upon the progess of the students.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: You will learn to scan, retouch and manipulate b/w and color digital images using Photoshop and to print them in a professional manner. This ability is the prerequisite to all future digital imaging classes within the Photography Department.

WHAT YOU'RE TO DO: Work and participate actively. You should be organized, able to work for long periods alone, and enjoy the process of creating images experimentally with time devoted to building and rebuilding them. You will need to devote 6-10 hours per week to work outside class.

GRADE POLICY:
Grades are based on the quality of your work, your ability as a professional-in-training to meet each deadline, and your ability to work responsibly and creatively with problems and issues. Grades are awarded as follows:

Assignments For every assignment you must describe the technical means and aesthetic choices integral to the creation of your work during critiques. You will be graded at each deadline and, like any professional deadline, if you miss it you MAY NOT make it up. F for the assignment if you miss it; C, B, or A for quality of work if you meet it. We will not accept late work unless you have a valid excuse (30% of grade).
Tests & Quizes 20% of your grade. There will be quizzes and a final test based on lectures, weekly vocabulary, handouts and readings.
Participation 10% This includes your participation in critiques.

Final Project 40% of your grade. To be worked on for the last 4-5 weeks of the semester. A written proposal is required. This project must be presented in a professional manner.Generally students produce (15) 13x19 prints with suitable borders. Work should be matted if making letter size prints. It should also be of a number and complexity to cover the amount of time given for this project. One large print is not the same as a cohesive body of smaller prints printed as fine prints. You will be expected to articulate the technical means and aesthetic choices integral to the creation of your final project. If you miss the final critique, or do not produce a final project you will Fail the class. If you are working on the same project for another class you must do twice the number of prints, and let both instructors know you are doing this.
GRADES
A

B
Assignments presented on time, regular attendance, good participation, and steady significant efforts throughout.
C
Work not presented on time, assignments presented on dates other than deadlines, or of average quality and with average participation.
F
Work not presented on time, work which is not meet the minimum requirement.

NO INCOMPLETES

College Imcomplete Policy

An Incomplete Grade (I) can only be issued for an undergraduate student who has met one of the following criteria:

The student has successfully completed all course requirements to date but is faced with unexpected circumstances during the final weeks of the semester resulting in the inability to complete course requirements by the end of the semester.  The student must have, in the instructor’s estimation, the ability to complete missed course requirements outside of class and by the end of the eighth week of the following semester. The instructor must agree to evaluate the student’s work and replace the Incomplete grade before the end of the following semester. An agreement specifying work to be completed and a due date must be signed by both instructor and student and approved by the Department Chair. In the event that an instructor is no longer employed by the College, a program Coordinator, Director, or the Department Chair can evaluate the work and assign the course grade.

An external supervisor for an Internship has failed to submit a final report and grade recommendation by the deadline for grade submission or the Internship conclusion date falls beyond the end of the grade submission deadline.   The Internship Coordinator /faculty member is responsible for obtaining the final evaluation and submitting a letter grade to replace the Incomplete by the eighth week of the following semester.  An agreement specifying the need for the final evaluation from the external supervisor must be signed by both instructor and approved by the Department Chair. In the event that an instructor is no longer employed by the College, a program Coordinator, Director, or the Department Chair can evaluate the work and assign the course grade

Attendance: Any more than three absences will result in an 'F' (failure). The fourth absence - for any reason - constitutes a failing grade. (Two late arrivals = 1 absence) Lectures will be held at the beginning of class so you must be punctual. A professional attitude and approach toward all aspects of this course is expected. Specifically; class starts on time, and class attendance and participation are mandatory. Un-excused absences and un-excused lateness will adversely effect your grade. Please contact the instructor prior to class if you will be late or absent. If a student has any emergencies or difficulties in completing an assignment – THEY SHOULD CONTACT ME AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. My e-mail is tshirley@colum.edu there is no excuse for not contacting me.
Academic Conduct: Courtesy must be observed at all times in my classroom. Please read the academic policies of this college. I will follow those policies in any instance of academic dishonesty.
