Levels

Levels look similar to a Histogram, but have five arrows that allow adjustment to the image.  The input arrows increase contrast and overall lightness; the output arrows will grey the highlights or shadows.

To correct an image, move the input highlight and shadow arrows to the foot of the hill.

 

The result will be an image with proper contrast and minimal combing.

Then move the middle slider: right for darker, left for lighter.
